Facebook Hiring Apple Staff to Work on Own-Branded Smartphone

Facebook is again rumoured to be working on its own smartphone following efforts to hire a number of former Apple staff who developed the company’s iPhone.
There have been rumours that the website giant wants to boost its mobile offering and admitted in its stock market prospectus that its mobile services are not generating any significant revenues.
Citing unnamed sources, the New York Times said that following failed attempts to develop mobile services, the company has refocused its efforts on hardware and has created a team of engineers who have developed smartphones in the past.
One former Apple engineer said that he had met with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said.
The company is said to be concerned that with software companies increasingly dominating the smartphone market, that if it doesn’t create a fourth option from Android/Apple/Microsoft then it will be just a mere app on someone else’s environment.
Facebook did not deny the report, but reiterated a previous statement: “We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers.”
