Google has launched the Pixel 10 series. The highlight is simple. WhatsApp voice and video calls can work without mobile data or Wi-Fi.
This is a big shift in communication. Until now, satellite features on phones were limited. Most brands used them only for SOS alerts or basic location sharing. Pixel 10 is taking it further with real calls on WhatsApp.
How It Works
The rollout starts may be from August 28, 2025, with the first sale. After activation, a small satellite icon will appear in the status bar. That means the phone is linked to a satellite, not a cell tower.
The feature works only with select carriers and may come with extra charges. Google has not shared exact pricing yet, but satellite services are rarely free. Expect usage limits at first.
Why It Matters
This feature is useful for travelers, hikers, sailors, or anyone in remote areas. Even without coverage, WhatsApp calls can go through. It’s a new safety net for people who spend time off the grid.
Beyond Phones
Google also announced the Pixel Watch 4 LTE. It will be the first smartwatch to connect directly to satellites. That means calls or alerts could work even without a phone nearby.
What About Other Brands?
Apple added satellite support earlier but limited it to emergencies. You can share location and request help, but not make calls. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 allows satellite messaging, but again, no voice or video calls.
Pixel 10 changes that by adding WhatsApp. No new app is needed. No extra setup. You can keep using WhatsApp the same way, just without internet.
The Bigger Picture
This could lead to more. Live location, video clips, and messages could all work through satellites. Teams in the field, rural communities, and frequent travelers could all benefit.
Some questions remain. Will call quality be smooth? Will delay be noticeable? How much will people pay for it? These answers will come once users test it after launch.
For now, one thing is clear. Pixel 10 makes satellite calling part of daily life. What was once an emergency tool is becoming mainstream. Apple, Samsung, and others may soon expand their features too. That means fewer dead zones and more ways to stay connected.
