What is open RAN in simple terms?

Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) is a modern approach to building 5G networks that simplifies how different parts of the network communicate with each other. Traditionally, when setting up a wireless network, operators had to buy all the equipment from a single supplier, making it harder to adapt or improve the network later on.

Open RAN changes this by breaking down the network into smaller parts, like Lego blocks, that can come from different suppliers. It introduces “open interfaces,” which are like standardized connectors, allowing these blocks from different suppliers to work together seamlessly. This way, network operators can choose the best components for each part of their network, fostering competition among suppliers and potentially reducing costs.

In simpler terms, Open RAN is like building a 5G network with interchangeable parts, allowing network operators to choose pieces from different companies that fit together, offering more flexibility, innovation, and potentially cost savings in the process.
